Driven by a passion for nature conservation, the Uganda Women’s Water Initiative (UWWI) and
Women Earth Alliance (WEA) took significant steps to protect and diversify the environment in
the Kabarole district (Fort Portal tourism city). They planted various new tree species along River
Mpanga, including sisal, papyrus, and albizia, as well as evergreen trees such as pine, shrubs,
bushes, and cottonwoods. Additionally, they organized group bird-watching excursions. All
these activities were completed over the course of three days.
The birding excursion took place on the early morning of August 17, 2024, along the shores of
River Mpanga and in the forested area of Whispering Gardens. The goal was to observe and
identify bird species in the region to create a comprehensive bird checklist.
These are the birds we saw.
• Ring-necked dove.
• The pied crow measures 25 centimetres.
• The marabou stork is 124 centimetres tall, observed at7:20 am.
• The little weaver on River Mpanga bridge is 10centimetres, with yellow bronze mannikin coloration.
• The northern grey sparrow is 15 centimetres.
• The common bulbul is 15 centimetres, seen at 7:34 am.
• The northern masked weaver is 14 centimetres, seen atBuhinga Hospital.
• The village weaver is 17 centimetres, observed at 7:46am.
• The lead-coloured flycatcher is 1 centimetre, with ashygrey upperparts.
• The red-bellied paradise flycatcher is 21 centimetres,with brown and black chestnut plumage.
• The African openbill is black in colour.
• The African blue flycatcher is 11 centimetres.
• The African dusky flycatcher is 10 centimetres.
• The woodland kingfisher is 22 centimetres, with blue andblack plumage.
• The hadada ibis is 25 centimetres, with black plumage.
• The eastern grey plantain-eater is 9 centimetres, with ablack head, wax grey body, brown bill, and red and whitemarkings.
• The black-headed heron is 92 centimetres.
• The variable sunbird is 11 centimetres, with an orangeyellow underpart and green upperparts.
• The hamerkop is notable for being the only bird that buildsa large nest.
• The speckled mousebird is 33 centimetres.
• The giant kingfisher is 33 centimetres, the largest and mostspectacular kingfisher, black
